Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September 2009

1. Magic Square Koala Spotting           Christian Patteson

A leisurely stroll through the leafiest part of the Hawks Nest village soaking up the sights of wildflowers in bloom and the sounds of native birds on the wing. It is likely we will see one of the resident koalas.  Chris Patteson is a well-known local identity - author, photographer and horticulturalist.

2. Worrimi Land Wildflowers              Cliff Brown

Short drive to the National Park boundary, then a walk through aboriginal land towards Providence Bay and stunning wildflower country at its best after recent bushfires.

3. Yacaaba and Back                             Bob Kiddey

A walk along Bennetts Beach towards Yacaaba headland, across the dunes and along Jimmys Beach. Along the way we may see dolphins in the surf, migratory seabirds and perhaps even a dingo.

4. Birds of The Shortcut                     Kevin Haskew

We’ll start at Winda Woppa Reserve and walk along a bush track, past the wading bird lagoon, coastal vegetation and wildflowers to the shortcut channel where we may see curlews, oystercatchers, sandpipers and dotterels. We’ll return along Jimmy’s Beach, where we’ll probably see a dolphin or two.

5. Winda Woppa Circuit                       Kevin Green

At Winda Woppa Reserve we’ll see sawmill remains and the lagoon channel. and then back to Fishermans Walk and on to Jimmy’s Beach and past the threatened part of The Boulevarde. Return via The Anchorage to the cars for the return drive.  Our leader will describe many local historical aspects.

6. Golf Course Wildflowers                  Anne Haskew

A short drive to the end of the golf course where we will do a circuit in the blackbutt forest on the western side of Mungo Brush Road before walking the track at the northern end of the golf course where wildflowers are in bloom despite recent earthworks.  We’ll take short stroll down the Michael Rowe walk before returning to our cars.

7. Swan Bay Wildflowers                     Helen Dauncey

On the western side of Mungo Brush Road we’ll find native flowers well into Spring bloom. We may find “flying duck”, Nodding Greenhood or bearded orchids. On the return we’ll walk through the Tuloa Avenue blackbutt forest where the flannel flowers will be in profusion following last year’s controlled burn.

8. Jimmy’s Beach Bushland                   Rosemary Bright

A short walk to the Myall River wetlands and wildflowers behind the nursing home, on to Jimmy’s Beach for a short stroll along Port Stephens then through Jimmy’s Beach camp ground and Sclerophyll forest to Deadmans Dune. Finally we return to our starting point via Beach Road and the Surf Club.
